White Funeral Home Independence – Richard Leroy Meyers, 69 years old, died on Thursday, October 4, 2012, at his home in rural Independence, Iowa. He was born on May 22, 1943, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Joseph Henry and Marian Jeanette (Morey) Meyers. He graduated from Columbus High School in Waterloo, Iowa, before serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. After his military service he attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. On February 21, 1963, he and the former Cathy Jon Ryan were married in Waterloo. They were later divorced. Mr. Meyers was a salesman for several area companies before retiring. He enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles. He also entertained friends and family by playing the guitar and the electric keyboard. Recently, Mr. Meyers was a driver for the area Amish community. Mr. Meyers is survived by 2 sons, Christopher (Sheryl) Meyers of Waterloo, Iowa, and Erin Meyers of Providence, Rhode Island, 2 grandchildren, Mason Meyers and Lauren Meyers, and his long time friend, Delores Martin of Independence, Iowa. He is also survived by 2 brothers, Gary (Mariann) Meyers of Clifton, Colorado, and Joseph (Jan) Meyers of Wichita, Kansas, and 2 sisters, Anita (Bob) Bush of Waterloo, Iowa, and Renee (Dennis) DeBerg of Harpers Ferry, Iowa, and 1 step brother, Dan Mettner of Waterloo, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his step father, Harold Mettner, 3 sons, John Meyers, Mark Meyers, and Ryan Meyers, 1 granddaughter, Christen Meyers, 1 sister, Pam Burns. Friends and family may call for visitation from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at the White Funeral Home in Independence. |
