Independence – DeVere LaVelle Horn, 88 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at West Village Care Center in Independence. He was born on June 21, 1923, in Independence, Iowa, the son of August Julis and Maude (McGlaughlin) Horn. He attended school in Independence. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps during the construction of Backbone State Park. During World War II, Mr. Horn served in the U.S. Army. On March 4, 1948, he and the former Ruth Marie Strempke were married at the American Lutheran Church in Jesup, Iowa. They farmed until retiring in 1999. Mr. Horn was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence and the Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post #30. He could usually be found close to home tending the yard and taking care of family members. Mr. Horn is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ruth, 1 daughter, Linda (Roger) Falconer of Center Point, Iowa, 2 sons, Darrell (Teresa) Horn and Duane (Cindy) Horn, both of Independence, Iowa, 10 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 1 sister, Marsha (Don) Jacobson of Jesup, Iowa, and 1 sister-in-law, Carolee O’Brien of Independence, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister, and 1 granddaughter. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Pastor Kurt Bockoven officiating. Casket Bearers will be Tracy Clinton, Chad Krogman, Denny Horn, Danny Horn, Darren Horn, Jill Davis, Joni Leymaster, Jenny West, Angie Mann, and Dusty Horn. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a Military Service begins at 7 p.m.
