Independence – Dorothy Margaret Johnson, 89 years old, of Wakefield, Nebraska, died on Monday, January 2, 2012, at the Wakefield Care Center in Wakefield. She was born on August 30, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Richard Louie and Katherine Hermine (Harty) Schamp. She graduated from high school in Independence, Iowa, with the Class of 1939. On April 30, 1943, she and George Arthur Johnson were married in Wichita Falls, Texas. He preceded her in death in 1995. Mrs. Johnson was a nurse’s aide at the Mental Health Institute in Independence for 18 years. She retired in 1985. Mrs. Johnson moved to Nebraska to be near family in 2003. She enjoyed quilting and pets. She also valued her friends at the care center.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by 3 sons, James (Sandra) Johnson of Independence, Iowa, Ned (Pam) Johnson of Winthrop, Iowa, and Richard (Connie) Johnson of Tazares, Florida, 3 daughters, Nancy (Robert) Frerichs of Concord, Nebraska, Gloria (Stephen) Kroeze of Norwalk, Iowa, and Anna (Bill) Izzo of Winter Springs, Florida. She is also survived by 1 daughter-in-law, Sue Johnson of Kerkersville, North Carolina, 19 grandchildren, and 23 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sons, L. Kent Johnson and Joel Johnson, and 2 brothers, Donald Schamp and Ted Schamp.
Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Pastor Kurt Bockoven and Pastor William Bertrand officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. The family will greet friends an hour before services on Monday.
