Independence – Glenn R. Sanders, 88 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Monday, November 21, 2011, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence. He was born on February 11, 1923, in Otterville, Iowa, the son of Frank E. and Doris Elizabeth (Charlott) Sanders. At the age of 14 months, he went to live with his aunt and uncle, Chena and Cade Sanders. He attended school in Otterville and then graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1941. Mr. Sanders worked at the Mental Health Institute in Independence and then at the Walworth Defense Plant in Kewanee, Illinois, before entering the Army Air Corps, where he was an airplane mechanic, in 1943.
On April 9, 1944, he and the former Kathleen Mae “Kay” Shearer were married at the Methodist Church in Delhi, Iowa. They lived in Boise, Idaho, until his discharge in 1946, when they moved to Winthrop, Iowa. Mr. Sanders worked at the Winthrop Creamery and then, the Independence Dairy until 1962. At that time they purchased the Union Bus Depot and Café in Independence. He operated that business for 13 years. After that, he was employed by Armstead, Gerhardt, Inc., and Shaw’s Propane Service until he retired in 1985.
Mr. Sanders was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence, Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post #30 (a 60 year member), and the Buchanan County Historical Society. He also volunteered at the Cedar Valley Hospice in Independence. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and playing cribbage.
Mr. Sanders is survived by his wife of 67 years , Kay, 1 daughter, Sharon (Thomas) Borton of New London, Iowa, 1 son, Gene (Donna) Sanders of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 6 grandchildren, Lonnie (Cheryl) Borton of Birmingham, Iowa, Kristin (Duane) Stuekerjuergen of West Point, Iowa, Brian (Julie) Borton of New London, Iowa, Holly (Richard Bland) Sanders of Boulder, Colorado, and Kelli Sanders and Byron Sanders, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 6 great grandchildren, 2 step great granddaughters, and 1 step great great grandson, and 1 brother-in-law, George Shearer of Maquoketa, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his aunt and uncle, Chena and Cade Sanders.
Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2011, at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Burial will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Hazleton, Iowa. Friends may call from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25th, at the funeral home where a Military Service begins at 7 p.m. A Memorial Fund has been established.
