Jesup – Joanne Maxfield Drilling, 82 years old of Jesup, IA, died Friday, September 30, 2011, at her home of natural causes. She was born August 16, 1929, in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of William John August Maxfield and Mary Barnard (Doolittle) Maxfield. She graduated from West Delaware Community High School in Manchester, IA. On October 17, 1953, Joanne was united in marriage to Gerald Joseph Drilling in Waterloo, IA. Mrs. Drilling was an elementary school teacher for many years, teaching at Arlington, IA; St. John’s Catholic School, Waterloo, IA; Immaculate Conception School, Gilbertville, IA and St. Athanasius School, Jesup, IA. She also taught music lessons for many years and served area churches as organist. She was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA. In 1985 she received her BA Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa.
Mrs. Drilling is survived by her husband, Gerald Drilling of Jesup, IA; six daughters, Jody (Marsha Pollow) Maxfield of Des Moines, IA, Gina (George) Wagner of Norwalk, IA, Peggy Drilling of Jesup, IA, Maureen (Andrew) Apel of Raymond, IA, Mary Terry of Independence, IA, Rose Ivy of Hazelton, IA; three sons, Kenneth (Cathy) Drilling of Isanti, MN, Martin (Marie) Drilling of Waterloo, IA, Steve Drilling of Jesup, IA; 17 grandchildren; 4 great grand children; one sister, Jessie Stevens of Michigan; one brother, George (Dell) Maxfield of San Antonio, TX. She is preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Christine Lacey; one grandson, Eric Drilling; one great grandson, Atreus Bowman; son in law, Mel Ivy; two sisters, Dorothy Cooper and Teddy Harwell; one brother, William Maxfield, Jr.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. – Wednesday, October 5, 2011, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA with Fr. Kenneth C. Stecher as celebrant. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there will be a 3:00 p.m. Parish Rosary and 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services at the church on Wednesday. The casket will not be open at church.
