Raymond – Franklin Leo “PETE” Schaefer, 75 years old of Raymond, Iowa, died Monday, September 19, 2011 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minnesota, following a lengthy illness. He was born April 23, 1936, at Washburn, Iowa, the son of Frank Peter Schaefer and Elizabeth Ann (Hemmer) Schaefer. He graduated from Orange High School in Waterloo with the class of 1954. On February 15, 1958, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Solem at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Pete was employed for 38 years at John Deere in Waterloo; he also farmed and was a breeder of registered Black Angus Cattle. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Raymond, Pump-Scheer American Legion and Knights of Columbus Council 8227 both in Jesup, and the United Auto Workers Union Local 838 in Waterloo.
Mr. Schaefer is survived by his wife, Shirley of Raymond, IA; one son, Craig (Mary Kay) Schaefer of Waterloo, IA; three daughters, Anne (Scott) Sergeant of Waterloo, IA, Connie (Scott) Smith of Jesup, IA, Carolyn (Mike) Lahey of Sherrill, IA; 11 grandchildren, Brooke (Richard) Prestegard, Bricelyn, MN; Jared (Ashley) Sergeant of Sioux Falls, SD; Byron Sergeant of Iowa City, IA; Danielle (Dustin) Thorson of Jesup, IA; Joshua Smith of Fairbanks, AK; Emily Schaefer, Abby Schaefer and Elizabeth Schaefer of Waterloo, IA; Blake (Melissa) Schmit of Gilbertville, IA; Megan Schmit of Sherrill, IA; Melissa Schmit of Waterloo, IA; 8 great grandchildren, Hayden Prestegard, Grace Thompson, Camille Thorson, Maddox Thorson, Spring Smith, Ian Schmit, Alexis Schmit and Phillip Schmit; four sisters, Charlene (Gerald) Youngblut of Jesup, IA; Janette Schaefer of Washburn, IA; Vernette “Rosie” Youngblut of Jesup, IA; and LaVonne (Wayne) Weber of Waterloo, IA. He is preceded in death by one infant son, Mark; his parents; two brothers, Henry and Roger Schaefer and two sisters, Mildred O’Connor and Donnalene Butler.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Saturday, September 24, 2011, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, Iowa with Fr. Lloyd E. Reuter as Celebrant. Music will be by Sue Davis, organist, Todd Rohlfsen, soloist and the IC Choir. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Gilbertville. Public visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2011, at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, Iowa where there will be a Parish Rosary at 3:00 p.m., a Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. and a Knight of Columbus Rosary at 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
Memorials will be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Raymond, Iowa; Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, Iowa and to the Bosco System in Gilbertville.
