INDEPENDENCE – Harold Clifford Wayson, 87 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at his home in Independence, following a lengthy illness.

Private family services will be held at the St. John Catholic Cemetery in Independence with military honors accorded by the Bechter-Boies VFW Post 2440 assisted by the United States Army Honor Guard.

Harold was born on December 18, 1938, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Claude Raymond Wayson and Marvyl Antionette (Anderson) Wayson. He graduated high school in Jesup, Iowa, with the class of 1957. Harold served his country with the United States Army as an electrician and was honorably discharged in 1961. After moving back home, he was hired by John Deere as an apprentice electrician. He continued working for the company until his retirement in 1992 after 29 years of service. On August 10, 1963, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Kay Bundy at St. John Catholic Church in Independence, Iowa. The couple made their home in Waterloo for a short time, before moving to Independence, where they raised their family and became involved in the community. Harold was an active member of UAW Local 838 in Waterloo, former Independence City Councilman, and member of St. John Catholic Church.

Harold collected John Deere memorabilia, loved to watch T.V., especially Gunsmoke, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.

Harold is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Wayson of Independence; his children, Brian (Sheila) Wayson of North Liberty, Iowa, Dianna (Brian) Steele of Muscatine, Iowa, Craig (Giovanna Urdangarain) Wayson of Northern California, Kerry Wayson of North Liberty; 6 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter; and 1 brother, Ross (Margaret) Wayson of Warsaw, Illinois.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and 2 sisters, Claudia Naibert and Wilma Wayson.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be given to some of Harold’s favorite organizations.
