INDEPENDENCE – JoAn Jeanette Ramsey, 86 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence.

Memorial visitation will be from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Friday, August 21, 2026, at White Funeral Home, Independence, Iowa, where a rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m.

JoAn was born July 14, 1940, in rural Buchanan County, Iowa, the daughter of Carl R. and Margaret A. (Hults) Strempke. She attended school in Independence and graduated with the Independence High School class of 1958. She continued her education at Allen School of Nursing in Waterloo, Iowa, where she obtained her LPN license. Over the years she lived in multiple states working as a nurse and taking care of family. In 2011 she moved back to Independence to be closer to her family.

As a healthcare professional, JoAn was a natural caretaker. She worked in pediatrics, skilled nursing, and the NICU department in multiple hospitals, as well as in medical records. In her spare time, she enjoyed collecting antiques and many different rocks. She loved birdwatching and taking walks outside. She could be a little stubborn from time to time, but her kind heart was always able to shine through.

JoAn is survived by her sister, Ruthe Gentry of Independence; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; and brothers and sisters, Charles Strempke, Bee Elaine Strempke, Betty Ann Atwood, Jayne White, Clinton Strempke, Clair Strempke, Clifford Strempke, Clyde Strempke, Carl Cleo Strempke, and Irene Kremer.
