INDEPENDENCE – Ronald Willard Wegner, 89 years old, of Independence, IA, died following a sudden illness, April 9, 2025, at MercyOne – Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, IA.

Public visitation will be 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Sunday, April 13, 2025, at White Funeral Home, Independence.

Private family funeral services will be Monday, April 14, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church followed by burial at Mt. Hope Cemetery, all in Independence. Military rites will be accorded by Bechter-Boies VFW Post 2440 and Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post 30, assisted by the United States Army.

Ronald was born August 8, 1935, in Sparta, WI, the son of Earl Richard Wegner and Ruth Lorraine (Rugg) Wegner. He attended school in Bangor, WI, and graduated with the Bangor High School class of 1952. He attended La Crosse State College in La Crosse, WI, until he volunteered for the military draft in August of 1954. Ron served in the United States Army until his honorable discharge in 1956. Ron returned to La Crosse State College and graduated in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in social studies. He continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA, and earned his master’s degree in guidance counseling in 1963.

On October 16, 1954, Ron was united in marriage to Marie Dallys Stetzer in Bangor, WI, and together, they made their home where Ron’s job took them. In 1958, Ron took a part-time position as a counselor and social studies teacher at Mabel High School in Mabel, MN. In 1963, the couple moved to Independence, IA, where Ron took a position as the high school guidance counselor at Independence High School, where he would remain until his retirement in 1999.

Ron had a sharp mind, and his curiosity and love of learning kept him engaged in his many interests. He enjoyed reading, gardening, and golfing. He loved sports and enjoyed following his favorite teams. Ron liked to travel and was fortunate to travel the world with his loving wife, Marie. He was a supportive dad, grandpa, and great grandpa, and loved playing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and attending all their activities. He had a great sense of humor and loved being with his family. Ron was very active in his profession and in the community of Independence where he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Independence Lions Club, the Buchanan County Foster Care Review Board, Geezer Golf and several education and school counselor organizations.

Ron is survived by his wife of 70 years, Marie Wegner of Independence, IA; his 3 children, Cathy (Jim) Lynes of Mauston, WI, David (Nancy) Wegner of Defiance, MO, Linda (Tom) Pattee of Cedar Falls, IA; 8 grandchildren, Ryan (Katy) Lynes, Kristin (Teddy) Lynes, Michael (Jordan) Wegner, Matthew Wegner, Sarah (Jack) Carraher, Megan (Mikey) Hermann, Jenna (Brooks) Frieden, Amy (Neal) Patel; 11 great grandchildren, James, Bobby, and Theo O’Reilly, Liam and Evan Lynes, Oliver, Preston, and Raphael Carraher, Lincoln and Violet Hermann, and Rowan Frieden; and 2 sisters, Karen (Ronald) Johnson of Bangor, WI, and Sandra (George) Barnes of Stevens Point, WI.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Lowell Wegner, and his sister- in- law, Janet Wegner.

Memorials will be directed to the family to be donated to Ron’s favorite organizations.
