INDEPENDENCE – Steven Lynn McMurrin, 67 years old, of rural Independence, IA – Otterville, died, Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, IA, following a courageous battle with leukemia.

Celebration of Life will be 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Hook ‘n Liner in Littleton, IA.

Steve was born July 18, 1957, in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of Neil Grant McMurrin and Doris Maria (Parshal) McMurrin. He attended Jefferson High School in Independence and graduated with the class of 1975. He continued his education at Hawkeye Institute of Technology in Waterloo, IA, before becoming a machinist. He worked for many years at Pries Enterprises in Independence, before taking a position with Ideal Industries in Vinton, IA. Steve was united in marriage to Sandra Kay Schmitz on October 9, 2004, on the family’s farm in rural Independence, IA, where they made their home.

Steve loved his family and always enjoyed going to his grandchildren’s events. He loved to play and coach baseball. Steve was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. He enjoyed time spent fishing, hunting, and collecting about anything – especially rocks. He was proud of his family’s farm, and he loved to be from Otterville.

Steve is survived by his wife, Sandra McMurrin of rural Independence; five children, Cylvi (Tondrell) Gary of Independence, Justin (Stacey) McMurrin of Mesa, AZ, Daniel (Megan) Straw, Sr. of Independence, Caleb (Valentina) McMurrin, Sr. of Tavares, FL, Jessica (Jason) Peterson of Independence; nine grandchildren with one on the way, Michael Taylor, Scott Faust, Daniel Straw, Jr., Stephanie Straw, Eilidh McMurrin, Caleb McMurrin, Jr., Nathan Faust, Duke Faust, and Keelan Peterson; two great grandchildren, Wyatt Faust and Suede Faust; two sisters, Carla McMurrin and Marla Bonebrake, both of Jesup, IA; two brothers, Darrin (Melanie) McMurrin of Winthrop, IA, and Tim McMurrin; also two sisters-in-law, Kris McMurrin of Winthrop and Linda Palmer of Mt. Vernon, IA.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, Clint Straw; three brothers, David McMurrin, Randy McMurrin, and Douglas McMurrin.
