INDEPENDENCE – Catherine Ann Smith, 92 years old, of Independence, IA, died of natural causes, Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Private inurnment will be at a later date in The Cremation Garden at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence.

Catherine was born November 2, 1932, in Independence, IA, the daughter of LeRoy and Grace Wooff. She attended Independence High School and graduated with the class of 1951. Catherine loved taking care of people. You could always find her doing something for other people. She enjoyed flowers and gardening and she loved to quilt and bake – doing so until she physically couldn’t anymore.

Catherine is survived by her daughter, Debra (Rick) Hemsath of Rowley, IA; two grandchildren, Carrie (Jamie) Koch of Independence; Craig (Brynna) Hemsath of LaPorte City, IA; and six great grandchildren, Hannah, McKenna, Hayden, Garrett, Eli, and Mae.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two sisters Marie Wooff and Fern Price; and her brother, Dean Wooff.
