Independence – R. Mason Marshall, 93 years old, of Monticello, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Sunday, June 19, 2011, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehab Center in Monticello. He was born on May 31, 1918, in Sycamore, Illinois, the son of Lester David and Lizzie Luycina (Mason) Marshall. He graduated from high school in Sycamore. On October 23, 1938, he and the former Charlotte Leah Benner were married at the Sycamore Methodist Church in Sycamore, Illinois. They moved their home to Independence, Iowa, in 1965. Mr. Marshall was a seed corn and fertilizer salesman in northeastern Iowa before retiring in 1985. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence, the Independence Masonic Lodge #87 A.F. and A.M., and he was a Past Grand Patriarch of the I.O.O.F. of Iowa.
Mr. Marshall is survived by his wife of 72 years, Charlotte, 3 sons, Ray (Rosanne) Marshall of Mendon, Michigan, David (Cheryl) Marshall of Anamosa, Iowa, and Charles (Theresa) Marshall of Kansas City, Missouri, 1 daughter, Janet L. Siesseger of Leslie, Arkansas, 12 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, and a good friend, Virginia Vela of Donna, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 sister Irene Draper.
Memorial Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, with Rev. Scott Meador officiating. Mr. Marshall’s cremated remains will be deposited in the Ossuary at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.
White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangement. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Monticello Rehab and Nursing Center or Above and Beyond Hospice, both in Monticello, Iowa.
