INDEPENDENCE – Alan Douglas Kress, 76 years old, of Independence, IA, died Monday, November 11, 2024, at Birdee Cottage Assisted Living, in Waterloo, IA.

Celebration of Life Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at White Funeral Home, Independence, IA, where military honors will be accorded. Private burial will be at another time at the Quasqueton Cemetery in Quasqueton, IA.

Alan was born on December 31, 1947, in Independence, IA, the son of Carl Weld Kress and Bernice Louella (Butterfield) Kress. He graduated from East Buchanan High School in Winthrop, IA, with the class of 1966. He served his country during the Vietnam War with the United States Air Force. On December 24, 1986, he married the former Judy (Beachler) Carver at the First Presbyterian Church in Rowley, IA. Alan was a plant manager at Triangle Plastics in Independence for many years, before becoming an inspector with the Quamico Company where he would ultimately retire from.

Alan enjoyed many adventures with his wife, Judy, and their friends. Everything from simply paddling on the Wapsi to traveling to Mt. Rushmore; staying in cabins in Wisconsin to driving down to Tennessee and many other fun times over the years. He liked to tend to his flower garden and take care of his yard. He was especially proud of his bubblegum petunias and his rose bushes. Alan also enjoyed history, and was part of the Quasqueton Historical Society, where he had donated his time and personal keepsakes he brought home from Vietnam.

Alan is survived by his nieces and nephews, Sonja Richardson of Layton, UT, Benita Hinsey of Quincy, IL, Kevin (Juanita) Legreid of Jefferson City, MO, Lorna (Dennis Crowley) Legreid of Chapin, IL, Bruce Pint, Todd (Shelli) Pint, and Troy (Donna) Pint, all of Jesup, IA, Shawn (Scott) McMahon of Phoenix, Arizona, Craig (Dawn) Kress of St. Augustine, FL, three brothers-in-law, Jim (Jean) Beachler of Cedar Rapids, IA, Darrell Pint of Jesup, IA, and Chuck Rohrer of Cedar Rapids, IA and one sister-in-law, Alleyne Kress of Denver, CO.

In addition to his wife, Judy, he was preceded in death by his parents; and his sisters and brother, Vivian Legreid, Joan Pint, Sally Rohrer, and Richard “Dick” Kress.

Memorials may be directed to the Quasqueton Historical Society or Cedar Valley Hospice.
