Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at White Funeral Home, Independence, IA. Private graveside services will be Thursday, October 31, 2024, at the Quasqueton Cemetery in Quasqueton, IA. Gene was born February 3, 1939, in rural Buchanan County, outside of Walker, IA, the son of Oscar John Arnold and Leona (Potter) Arnold. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Walker, graduating with the high school class of 1957. On July 8, 1961, he was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Vandaver. They made their home on the farm outside of Walker where Gene and Bev farmed and raised an assortment of animals over the years. Gene also worked construction as a heavy equipment operator and for a time he worked as a mechanic at the Ford garage in Walker. Gene was a lifetime resident of Walker and was proud to be a farmer. It was common to start the day with a coffee followed by a drive around the square to check on his friends; and ending the evening with a Busch Light or two. He enjoyed playing cards at the restaurant and chatting with his neighbors, and later in life he loved to do word searches. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Bev Arnold of Walker, IA; his six children, Anita (Patrick McMullen) Arnold of Center Point, IA, Angie (Brett) Thein of Woodstock, GA, Jon (Lisa Rees) Arnold of Manchester, IA, Annette (Brian) Voss of Weatherford, TX, Anna (Brian) Nichols of Weatherford, TX, and Andrea (Bob Arp) Arnold of Walker, IA; 19 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; his step-sister, Phyllis Randall of Quasqueton, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; one son, James “Jimmy” Arnold; and his sister, Beverly Crump. Memorials may be directed to the family to be given to other organizations in Gene’s memory.
