Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 29, 2024, at White Funeral Home, Independence, IA. Graveside services will be at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. John was born January 6, 1951, in Independence, IA, the son of Richard Henry “Dick” Gaffney and Kay Elizabeth (Kisner) Gaffney. He attended school in Independence and graduated from Jefferson High School with the class of 1969. He continued his education at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, IA. John was a multisport standout athlete in high school, and he continued to enjoy sports throughout his life. He was a longtime employee of John Deere and a member of UAW Local 838. On March 22, 2009, John was united in marriage to the former Judy Ann Geater in Portland, Maine. Together they made their home in Independence, where they enjoyed the company of many friends and relatives. John loved golf and he loved to be around people. He was a member of River Ridge Golf Course in Independence and a lifelong supporter of the Independence Mustangs. John is survived by his wife, Judy Gaffney of Independence, IA; three step-children, Cary (Luke Rioux) Phoenix of Yarmouth, ME; Jessica (Kevin) Dwyer of Durham, ME; Richie (Fran Lamantia) Phoenix of Cedar Creek, TX; four step-grandchildren, Charlotte Rioux, Axel Rioux, Bryce Dwyer, Seva Phoenix; one brother, Dale (Rose) Gaffney of Brainerd, MN; one sister, Penny (Andy) Donnelly of Independence; his mother-in-law, Eloise Geater; and beloved dogs, Cheyenne and Addi. He is preceded in death by his parents; and a step-granddaughter, Alivia Dwyer.
