Delores J. Martin |
White Funeral Home
Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Monday, October 28, 2024, at White Funeral Home, Independence. Delores was born November 19, 1940, in rural Bremer County, IA, the daughter of Ernest Charles Appleby and Joan Phoeby (Lucas) Appleby. The family moved to a farmhouse north of Otterville, IA, when Delores was an infant. She grew up on the family’s farm and received her education down the road at the Jericho country school – a one room schoolhouse, not far from her home. She graduated from Jefferson High School, with the class of 1953. On December 16, 1962, she married George Laverne Martin in Santa Rosa, CA. The two had met at a rodeo in Gilbertville, IA. Together, they lived for awhile in California before traveling the country with the carnival. When George’s health started to fail, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, and after his death, Delores moved back to the road she grew up on north of Otterville, IA. Delores wrote for the Independence Bulletin Journal for many years and volunteered with the Buchanan County Historical Society. She tended bar at the Majestic in Independence, and she loved to tell stories and get to know people. She was a staple of the Amish community and was a willing hand that helped wherever she could. Her neighbors became family, and she shared in the joys and sorrows of their lives. Delores had many different jobs over the years and many different talents. She was a wonderful writer and a talented photographer. She cherished her travels to the national parks and loved seeing the buffalo roam and the wild horses stampede through the plains. Wherever her travels took her, Iowa was always home, and Delores was always “just a farm girl.” She is survived by her daughter, Lorrie Martin of Rapid City, SD; son, Charles Martin of Independence, IA; three grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one sister, Peggy Hoehne of Rogers, AR. Memorials may be directed to the family. Condolences may be placed at www.White-MtHope.com. White Funeral Home, Independence, IA, is in charge of arrangements. |
