Waterloo – James Lenn Hayward, 81 years old, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 5, 2011, at Covenant Medical Center following a sudden illness. He was born on February 21, 1930, in Buchanan County, near Independence, Iowa, the son of Lenn S. and Margaret Inez (Ocker) Hayward. He graduated from high school in Independence with the Class of 1947, and then graduated from the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. On October 5, 1950, he and the former Phyllis Catherine Weber were married in Independence, Iowa. They later divorced. On November 16, 1974, he and the former Donna Marie Cue Luck were married in Waterloo, Iowa. Mr. Hayward was a policeman in Independence for 29 years. He retired in 1993 as the Assistant Chief with a rank of Detective. He was formerly a member of the Jaycees in Independence and was a past president of the Northeast Iowa Police Officers Association. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR racing and dog racing. He also followed the games of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears.
Jim was a good man who loved his family and life, and he will be greatly missed.
Jim is survived by his wife, Donna, 3 sons, Michael (Linda) Hayward of Independence, Iowa, David (Claudette) Hayward of Columbus, Indiana, and Fay Luck of Denver, Colorado; 4 daughters, Barbara (Burt) VanHorn of Independence, Iowa, Lorie (Ed) Holmes of Denver, Colorado, Robin (Dave) Brainard of Luana, Iowa, and Kathleen Burgess of Marion, Iowa. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 1 brother, Marvin (Jo) Hayward of Independence, Iowa, and 1 sister, Phyllis Fuller of Independence, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Dale “Shorty” Hayward, 1 sister-in-law, Patricia Hayward, and 2 brothers-in-law, Clarence “Dick” Fuller and Marvin Cue.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Pastor Bill Holley officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence. Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8th, at the funeral home.
