INDEPENDENCE – Donald Lewis “Scottie” Scott, 86 years old, of Independence, IA died, Thursday, October 10, 2024, at his home in Independence following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. - Monday, October 14, 2024, at White Funeral Home, Independence, with burial at the Wilson Cemetery in Independence. Military honors will be accorded by Bechter-Boies VFW Post 2440 and Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post 30, assisted by the United States Army.

Visitation will be 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 13, 2024, at White Funeral Home, Independence, and will continue for an hour before services at the funeral home.

Donald was born February 11, 1938, in Independence, IA, the son of Eldon James Scott and Merle Adele (Sly) Scott. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Independence, with the class of 1956. On April 2, 1960, he was united in marriage to Judith Mae Dodge at the First Presbyterian Church in Independence.

Donald joined the U.S. Army in 1957 serving over 20 years until retirement in 1981. Overseas tours were in Korea, three separate tours in Vietnam (two as a helicopter pilot), two separate three year tours in Germany and 6 months temporary duty in Iran (teaching the Iranians how to fly helicopters.)

After he retired from his military career, Donald worked as an inspector at Chamberlain Manufacturing in Waterloo, IA, as well as Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids, IA, retiring in 1993. He didn’t stay idle for long, as Donald started a handyman business, where he would take on an assortment of jobs throughout the area, often charging very little, if anything for his service. For him, it was about helping people and staying social. In his spare time, he liked to fish, hunt, and putz around.

Donald is survived by his wife of 64 years, Judy Scott of Independence; his daughter, Debbie (Bruce) Sorensen of Castle Rock, CO; his son, Jeff (Delora) Scott of Florence, SC; seven grandchildren, Aaron (Jenna) Scott, Josh (Chrissy) Scott, Jenna Scott, Brad (Amber) Sorensen, Nathan (Haley) Sorensen, Issac Sorensen, and Timmy Sorensen; also eight great grandchildren, Maverick, Charlie, Grayson, Whitman and Cora Scott, and Jamison, David and Colt Sorensen; his sister-in-law, Sandra Scott of Washington, IA; also, Judy’s brother Johnny (Nancy) Dodge of Independence; and her sister Joyce (Herb) Rasmussen of Marion, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

Donald is preceded in death his parents; his brother Ronald Scott; his sister Shirlee Rasmussen; as well as Judy’s parents, John and Bernice Dodge; her brothers Jim (Carole) Dodge, and Jerry Dodge; also, nephews, Kurt Scott, Tony Dodge and Jonathan Dodge; and niece, Traci Rasmussen.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or charity of the donor’s choice.
