JESUP - Joyce Marie Schares 88 years old of Jesup, IA, died peacefully, Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at her home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Thursday, October 3, 2024, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Wednesday October 2nd at the White Funeral Home in Jesup, where there will be a Parish Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

Joyce was born July 24, 1936, in Waterloo, the daughter of Stacy John Hellman and Evelyn Anna (Ames) Hellman. She graduated from Waterloo West High School with the class of 1954 and then worked at Rath Packing in Waterloo for four years. On May 10, 1958, she was united in marriage to Donald Peter “Spike” Schares at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Waterloo. They made their home in Jesup where Joyce was a pre-school teacher for 15 years at Lil’ Rascals Pre-School. She was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church.

Joyce is survived by two sons, David (Renee) Schares of La Porte City, IA, Dan Schares of Waterloo; two daughters, Cindy Peterson of Waterloo, Roxanne (Mitch) Alm of Pigeon Forge, TN; 8 grandchildren, Cory, Krista, Kyle, Carsyn, Mitchell, Gracy, Lilly, and Skylar; 7 great grandchildren, Alexi, Adrian, Charlotte, Elora, Savannah, Madison and Ridge; also one sister, Sally (Gary) Wagner of Dubuque, IA.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald on September 30, 2011; also, her parents; one sister, Diane MacLennan and one granddaughter, Sarah Alm.
