White Funeral Home DUNKERTON - James Richard Hauptly, 79 years old, of Dunkerton, IA, passed through the valley of the shadow of death on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at his home in Dunkerton. Public memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. – Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, where there will be a time to greet the family following the services at the funeral home. Private family graveside services will take place, Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Fairview Cemetery in Dunkerton. Jim was born December 15, 1944, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the son of Carroll Edwin Hauptly and Ilene Marle (Smith) Hauptly. He graduated from high school in Dunkerton, with the class of 1962 and then attended Ft. Dodge Community College. On September 18, 1965, he was united in marriage to Sue Anne Riordan at the First Baptist Church in Dunkerton. Jim loved to work with his hands as he grew up in the construction business. He was a millwright with Hauptly Construction and learned at a young age what it meant to do a job well. At 10 years old he worked for 15¢ per hour and at 21 years old, he became the foreman & boss ever since. His entrepreneurial spirit and love for business lead him to multiple business ventures over the years. In the ‘80’s his latest endeavor was moving to Wisconsin and working his two farms, which included milking 160 cows, twice a day. He eventually came back to Dunkerton and worked construction until his retirement at the age of 59. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sue Hauptly of Dunkerton, IA; his children, Benjamin (Sharon) Hauptly of Dunkerton, IA, Gina (David) Gartin of Cedar Falls, IA, Michael (Misty Dawn) Hauptly of Asheboro, NC; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Don Hauptly of Dunkerton, IA, Jon (Cindy) Hauptly of Waterloo, IA; one sister, Jan Hauptly of Dunkerton, IA; his step – brothers and sisters, Joe (Teresa) Bartholomew of Dunkerton, IA, Janet (Steve) Dullard of Florida; Jolene (Robert) Wheeler of Cedar Falls, IA, Jayne (Randy) Reed of Dunkerton, IA; his sisters – in – law, Siong Hauptly and Lisa Bartholomew; and many nieces and nephews. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, “Sal” Alice Jean (Shimp) Bartholomew; his sister in infancy, Beatrice Hauptly; one brother, Robert Hauptly and one step-brother Jim Bartholomew. Memorials will be given to Jim’s favorite organizations. |
