She was born April 9, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, IA, the daughter of Donald Edward Akers and Virginia Ellen (Miner) Akers. Virginia attended Springville High School in Springville, IA, and graduated with the class of 1962. She married Marvin Carney in Springville, and they later divorced. On November 11, 1989, Virginia was united in marriage to Larry B. Burkey in Troy Mills, IA. The couple made their home in rural Rowley. Virginia enjoyed working as a waitress over the years, getting to know the customers, and being social. She liked to shoot pool and enjoyed playing in the pool league for Wee Willy’s Tap in Quasqueton, IA. She had a quick wit, great sense of humor, and her family was most important to her. She is survived by her husband, Larry Burkey of Rowley, IA; one son, Robert “Bud” Carney of Cedar Rapids, IA; two daughters, Kim Evens and Danielle Carney, both of Marion, IA; seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren; two brothers, and two sisters. She is also survived by two step-children, Lindsay Burkey of Mississippi and Troy Burkey of Iowa City, IA; and two step-grandchildren. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one sister. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the family.
