Memorial Services will be, 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 26, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church – Jubilee, in rural La Porte City, IA. Burial will be at the Garden of Memories in Waterloo, IA. Visitation will be for an hour before services at the church. Bonnie was born April 23, 1946, the daughter of Gerald Luther Thompson and Hazel Mae (Smith) Thompson in Waterloo, IA. She grew up on the family’s farm in rural Buchanan County and graduated from high school in Jesup, IA, with the class of 1964. She married John Kennett on June 13, 1964, and the couple later divorced. Bonnie continued her education at Lewis - Clark State College in Lewiston, ID, and received her advanced degree in psychology. She moved to Alaska and was a correctional officer specializing in juvenile corrections. She became an Alaska State Trooper and retired in 2005 upon her return to Iowa. Bonnie was a hard worker and loved taking care of her property in rural Independence. She enjoyed mowing, finding rocks, tending to her plants, and watching the birds. She loved her family and was very involved in everything they did. She took up taekwondo and encouraged her granddaughter to as well. Bonnie became good friends with her instructors and was proud that she earned many belts along the way. Bonnie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church – Jubilee. Bonnie is survived by her children, Kelly Petrillo of Independence, Shaun (Lia) Kennett of Truckee, CA, Sonya (Benjamin) Kennett-Bethune of Jesup, IA; seven grandchildren, Alasa Stoinich, Amanda Stoinich, Grace Petrillo, Zachary Kennett, Trevor Kennett, Ross Bethune, Violet Bethune; two great granddaughters, Avah Wilder, Aurora Kite; one brother, Allen (Janis) Thompson of Independence, IA; and her nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials may be directed to the family. White Funeral Home - Independence is in assisting the family. |
