Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. – Friday, October 27, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Gilbertville. Military rites will be conducted by Nugent-Demuth Post 714 of Gilbertville and assisted by the Iowa National Guard. Visitation will begin with a parish vigil service at 4:00 p.m. – Thursday, October 26th, 2023, followed by a parish rosary and will conclude at 7:00 p.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Friday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family or a charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be posted at www.White-MtHope.com Charles was born June 4, 1928, on a farm near Gilbertville in Black Hawk County, IA, the son of Adolf J. Steils and Anntonette (Backes) Steils. He attended school in Gilbertville. On June 2, 1954, he was united in marriage to Rose Marie Clevenger in Jesup, IA. Charles served in the US Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He received three Bronze Stars and a combat infantry badge for his service. He was employed at John Deere for 28 years, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, also a member and past commander of Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 714 in Gilbertville. He was a member of UAW Local 838 in Waterloo. Charles is survived by four daughters, Lucinda “Cindy” Balvanz of Waterloo, Patricia “Patty” Steils of Raymond, IA, Theresa Steils of Waterloo, Ann Marie (Virgil) Eilers of Evansdale, IA; three sons, Glenn Steils of Gilbertville, Marvin (Laura) Steils of Evansdale, Mark (Laurie Huss-Steils) Steils of Altoona, IA; 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; four sisters, Manetta Buzyski of Oelwein, IA, Jean Anne Arnold of Oelwein, Shirley (Norman) Duffy of Fairbank, IA, Joyce (Donald) Kane of Batton Rouge, LA. His parents; wife, Rose; one son, John Steils; two sisters, Margorie Mettner and Germain Decker; and two brothers, Robert Steils and Raymond Steils, preceded him in death. White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, oversees the arrangements. |
