Services will be 10:30 a.m. – Monday, October 23, 2023, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., Sunday, October 22nd at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA. A parish rosary will begin at 3:00 p.m., Sunday. Visitation will also continue for an hour before services Monday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Dunkerton Ambulance Service. Online condolences may be posted at www.White-MtHope.com Cheryl was born July 29, 1959, in Waterloo, IA, the daughter of Ernest Peter Hemmer and Thelma Esther (Harrington) Hemmer. She graduated from Jesup High School with the class of 1977. On April 17, 1982, she was united in marriage to Jerry Lee Schmitz in Gilbertville, IA. They later divorced. On May 31, 2014, she married Michael Francis Steffen in Gilbertville. Cheryl was a member of St. Francis Barclay Catholic Church, rural Dunkerton. She was employed at the University of Northern Iowa as a custodian. Cheryl is survived by her husband, Michael of Dunkerton; one son, Nicholas Schmitz and fiancé| Miguel Rodriguez of San Diego, CA; two daughters, Elizabeth Nordin of Dunkerton, Kathryn Schmitz (Becks Jordan) of Queen Creek, AZ; one step-daughter, Lauren (Aaron) Aguilar of Westgate, IA; two step-sons, Eddie (Katelyn) Steffen of Richmond Hill, GA, Sam Steffen of Waterloo; 6 grandchildren, Steven and Axl Aguilar, Mavrick & McKenna Steffen, Avery and Felicity Nordin; also, 3 brothers, Larry (Florence) Hemmer of Indianapolis, IN, Jack (Nikki) Hemmer of Jesup, Steve (Blane) Hemmer of Minneapolis, MN. Cheryl was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joshua Michael Schmitz; 2 brothers, Tom and Bob Hemmer; and one sister, Janice Youngblut. White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, is in charge of the arrangements. |
