INDEPENDENCE – Doris Elizabeth Budzine, 97 years old, of Independence, IA, died Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. – Thursday, November 2, 2023, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence with Rev. Greg DeBoer officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Independence.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 1^st at White Funeral Home, Independence, and will continue for an hour before services, Thursday, at the church.

Doris was born July 4, 1926, in Independence, the daughter of John Thomas and Jessie (Bushell) Mumford. She graduated from high school in Quasqueton, IA, with the class of 1943. On June 3, 1947, she was united in marriage to Merritt Eugene Budzine at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. He preceded her in death in 1995.

Mrs. Budzine did clerical work for various stores in Independence, including Woodward’s Clothing Store, A & P Grocery, Gambles, and Watkin’s Pharmacy. After getting married, Doris spent most of her time raising her children and working as the bookkeeper for Bud’s Electric. Doris enjoyed gardening, sewing, and shopping. She liked to quilt with the ladies at church, and get together to socialize with her pals, the Slick Chics. Doris was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Doris is survived by one daughter, Dorene (Mike) Hulseberg of Independence, IA; two sons, Gene (Janny) Budzine, and Larry (Karri) Budzine, all of Independence, IA; eight grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one sister Esther Oline of Independence, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merritt; one son in infancy, Allen Budzine; one brother Franklin Mumford; two sisters, Frances Bantz and Anna Mae Crawford.
