Memorial Services will be 2:00 p.m. – Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence, with Pastor Greg DeBoer officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until services at the church. Private family burial will follow at the Rowley Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Bechter-Boies VFW Post #2440 assisted by the United States Army. Donald William Hemsath was born August 4, 1936, in Black Hawk County, near Dewar, IA, the son of Ernest Fredrick “Mike” Hemsath and Pearl Leona (Myers) Hemsath. He attended school at Dewar and began working at an early age. On November 4, 1955, he was united in marriage to Carol Ann Gosse at Bennington Lutheran Church in Waterloo, IA. The couple made their home in Waterloo and Don worked construction and also as a mechanic. They moved several times in the area before settling in Rowley in 1968. Don worked for the REC as a lineman for 30 years, and was a member of the IBEW in Waterloo. He enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and he loved woodworking. He was also an avid gardener, planting many Good Friday Potatoes over the years. Don was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. Don is survived by two sons, Rick (Deb) Hemsath and Scott (Kathy) Hemsath, both of Rowley, IA, and one daughter, Pam (Vince) O’Loughlin of Independence, IA. He is also survived by six grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Winder of Cedar Falls, IA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carol; one brother, Claude Hemsath; and five sisters, Darlene Rigdon, Dorothy Cook, Betty Knox, Katy Marks, and Lois Ann Rookaird. Memorials may be made to the church and the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center in Don’s name. White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements. |
