White Funeral Home INDEPENDENCE – Karla K. Curry, 82 years old, of Independence, IA, died of natural causes, Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at her home in Independence. Memorial Services will be 1:00 p.m. – Friday, June 23, 2023, at White Funeral Home, Independence, followed by inurnment at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until services, Friday, at the funeral home. Karla Kay Raine was born December 22, 1940, in Independence, IA, the daughter of Robert LeRoy Raine and Wilma Arlene (Gill) Raine. She graduated from Independence High School with the class of 1959. On August 24, 1963, she was united in marriage to Bernard Francis Curry at St. John Catholic Church, Independence. He preceded her in death on December 30, 2014. Karla and Bernard made their home in Independence. Karla worked at the telephone office for a time, then worked at People’s Hospital in Independence, as a secretary for 12 years, and then started her own in-home childcare business. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church and participated in St. John’s Rosary Society. She bowled for many years and liked to play cards and bingo with her family and friends. She loved her family and enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s events, whether it was wrestling, football, or baseball. Karla was an avid Elvis Presley fan. She enjoyed multiple trips to Graceland over the years, most recently just a few months ago, and she loved to collect anything, Elvis! Karla is survived by one daughter, Brenda Curry-Thompson of Independence, IA; one son, Jeff Curry of Lynchburg, VA; her grandchildren, Desiree McMurrin, Jordan (Justin) Coleman, Cody Thompson, and Landon (fiancé Lindsey Downs) Curry; her great grandchildren, Lily McMurrin, London Eichstadt, and Oliver Ball; and one brother, William Raine and his friend Dianna VanLaningham of New Hampton, IA. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; and one brother, Gary Raine. Memorials may be directed to the St. John’s Catholic Church and Cedar Valley Hospice.
