Jesup - Marie Helen Kass, 92 years old and formerly of Jesup, IA, died following a short illness, Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, IA, surrounded by her family.  She was born April 23, 1918, at home, on the family farm, south of Dubuque at Bernard, IA, the daughter of Anthony A. Fischer and Mary Ann “Mamie” (Johnson) Fischer.  On October 21, 1941, she was united in marriage to Alfred A. Kass at the Holy Family Monastery, Peosta, IA.  They made their home south east of Jesup where they farmed and raised their family.  In 1981, Marie and Alfred retired and moved to town.  He preceded her in death on January 13, 1982.  Marie enjoyed sewing and cooking, her children, grand and great grand children, and she loved to garden.  She was a member of St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA, and Catholic Daughters of the America Court of St. Pius X #1714 of Jesup.

Mrs. Kass is survived by two sons, Carl (Connie) Kass of Independence, IA, Don (Teresa) Kass of Jesup, IA; one daughter, Janice (Brian Burns) Kass of Toddville, IA; five grandchildren, Yvette (Kurt) Vogel, Yves (Paul) Zachar, Curt Kass, Brett Kass and Erin Kass; eight great grandchildren, two brothers, Albert (Vicki) Fischer of Bernard, IA, and Earl (Mary) Fischer of Peosta, IA, 2 sisters, Dorothy Ruden and Bernadine Kronaizl of Dubuque, IA.  She is also survived by brother in laws, Richard Strohmeyer of Dubuque, IA,  Arnold Kass of Independence, IA, Arthur Kass of Dunkerton, IA; and sister in laws, Doris Fischer of Sherrill, IA, Rita Fischer of Cascade, IA, Tillie Phillips of Independence, IA, and Dorothy Kass of Cedar Falls, IA.

In addition to her husband, Alfred, she is preceded in death by four brothers, Donald, John “ Jack”, Bill and Paul Fischer and one sister, Rose Strohmeyer.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. - Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup, IA, with Fr. Kenneth C. Stecher as celebrant.  Music will be by Monica Bengston, organist; Katie Vogel, soloist; and the St. Athanasius Choir.  Honorary Casket Bearers will be Devin Kass, Andrea Vogel and Curt Kass.  Casket Bearers will be Karl Vogel, Brett Kass, Brady Kass, Erin Kass, Autumn Vogel, and Brett Vogel.  Burial will be in St. Athanasius Catholic Cemetery, Jesup, IA.  Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 4th at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, were there will be a Catholic Daughters of the Americas Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.  Visitation will continue for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.  Memorials will be directed to St. Athanasius Catholic Church and to the Cedar Valley Hospice.
