JESUP – Herbert C. Jones, D.D.S., 90 years old of Jesup, IA, died Saturday, April 18, 2015, at the Buchanan County Health Center – Long Term Care Unit, in Independence, IA.  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. – Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at the American Lutheran Church, Jesup, with burial at Oakwood Cemetery, Independence.  Military Rites will be conducted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup.  Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. - Tuesday at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.  Memorials may be directed to the American Lutheran Church and Dollars for Scholars in Jesup.  Online condolences may be made at www.White-MtHope.com

Herbert C. Jones was born April 23, 1924, in Independence, IA, the son of George Herbert Jones and Ruth (Bomhoff) Jones.  After graduation from Independence High School in 1941, He attended Independence Junior College and Wartburg College.  He enlisted in the US Army in 1944 and was assigned to the Army Specialized Training Corps.  Following his graduation from the University of Iowa, School of Dentistry in 1947, Dr. Jones began his dental practice in Jesup.  On October 28, 1950, he and Olive Hazel Heifner were married at Trinity Methodist Church in Des Moines, IA.  In 1951, he began serving 2 years in the Army Dental Corps, stationed in Hawaii, and returning to Jesup and his dental practice in 1953.  Over the years Dr. Jones was involved in many civic activities.  He was a member of the Jesup Lions Club; Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342; had served on the Jesup City Council and Jesup Community School Board; Jesup Senior Citizen Housing Board; Buchanan County Board of Health; Buchanan County Tourism; Buchanan County Historical Society; served on the Boy Scouts of America - Winnebago Council Executive Board, and was a recipient of the scout's Silver Beaver Award; also a member of the Iowa and American Dental Associations and had served as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Dentistry at the University of Iowa for two years.  Dr. Jones was also an active member of the American Lutheran Church in Jesup where he served many years as treasurer, was in the church choir, and served as Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years.

Dr. Jones is survived by two daughters, Carla Hughes of Cedar Rapids, IA, Harriet (Duncan) McClelland of Wilson, WY; two sons, Dr. Merritt (Connie) Jones of Jesup, Andrew (Beth) Jones of Littleton, CO; six grandchildren, Mark Hughes, Erica (Robert) Wolterman, Dr. Christopher Jones, Brian Jones, Madeline McClelland and Merritt McClelland and two great grandchildren, Lillian Wolterman and Edison Wolterman; and one sister, Caroline Foster of Madison, WI.  His parents and wife, Olive, preceded him in death.
