Independence – Betty J. Williams Carson, 94 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at Buchanan County Health Center Long Term Care in Independence.  She was born on March 9, 1920, in Mt. Auburn, Iowa, the daughter of Carlton McKinley and Phyliss Blanche (McRoberts) Rainville.  When Betty was 8 years old, she and her family moved to Walker, Iowa, where her father was the depot agent for the Rock Island Railroad.  The family lived in the Walker Depot. She graduated from high school in Walker with the Class of 1937.  On March 16, 1938, she and Loyd Marvin Williams were married in Walker.  They farmed south of Rowley, Iowa.  Through the years, Betty was a superb farm wife.  Loyd preceded her in death in 1968.  On January 22, 1971, she and Ernest Ezra Carson were married in Rowley.  He preceded her in death in 1998. Betty was a member of the 1st United Methodist Church in Independence.  She also volunteered at the Independence Senior Center.  She enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished seamstress.

Betty is survived by 2 daughters, Connie (Don) Brown of Independence and Janet Ghere of Clear Lake, Iowa, 6 grandchildren, David Brown, Burdette Brown, Peggy Marks, Jerry Williams, Jess Ghere, and Billie Serocki, 16 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren.  She is also survived by 1 sister, Virginia Heth of Marshalltown, Iowa, and 1 brother, Richard (Velma) Rainville of Marion, Iowa.

In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, 1 son, Marvin Williams, 1 daughter, Gracie Williams, 1 grandson, Jake Ghere, and 1 great great grandson, Kinnick Marks.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015, at the 1st United Methodist Church in Independence with Rev. Scott Meador officiating.  Burial will be in the Walker Cemetery in Walker.  Friends may call for visitation after 1:00 p.m. at the church.  A Memorial Fund has been established for the 1st United Methodist Church in Independence.
