Brandon – Norman Clare Sloan, 89 years old, of rural Brandon, Iowa, died on Saturday, November 1, 2014, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa.  He was born on September 24, 1925, in Buchanan County, near Rowley, Iowa, the son of Will Azotus and Esther Nellie (Miller) Sloan.  He graduated from high school in Brandon with the Class of 1942.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in the Pacific until 1946.  He returned to his home farm and began working with his father.  He continued farming all his life.  He later transitioned to working with his sons and retired in 2010.  On July 27, 1947, he and the former Gladys Mae Sanders were married in Brandon.  She preceded him in death in 1990.  On August 30, 1991, he and the former Dorothy Harriett McKinley were married in Brandon.

Mr. Sloan was a member of the Brandon United Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau, the Buchanan County Pork Producers, and the Buchanan County Cattlemen.  He was always interested and involved with soil conservation.  He enjoyed wintering in Florida and riding his bicycle.

Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Dorothy, 2 sons, Robert Sloan of Waterloo, Iowa, and Richard (Diana) Sloan of Rowley, Iowa, 1 daughter, Carol Citty of Tampa, Florida, and 7 step children, Tracy, Deana, Gary, Tim, Tom, Mary, and Sheila.  He is also survived by 1 grandson, Adam Citty, many step grandchildren and great grandchildren, 1 sister, Shirley (Harold) Gates of LaPorte City, Iowa, and 1 brother, Bill (Betty) Sloan of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, Burl Sloan (who was killed in action during WW II) and Jerry Sloan, and 1 sister, Norma Shaeffer.

Memorial Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Brandon with Rev. Lexi Kirkpatrick officiating.  His cremated remains will be buried in Brandon Cemetery.  White Funeral Home of Independence is in charge of arrangements.
