Independence – Donald “Dutch” Forsythe, Sr., 83 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, October 18, 2014, at ABCM Rehab. Independence – West in Independence.  He was born on April 5, 1931, in Dundee, Iowa, the son of Richard William and Lucy Margaret (Troup) Forsythe.  He graduated from high school in Dundee.  On January 31, 1950, he and the former Edith May Frank were married in Dunkerton, Iowa.  They settled in Independence where Mr. Forsythe owned and operated Dutch’s Standard Service Station.  He retired in 1996.  Mr. Forsythe was a collector of banks and baseball cards.  He also collected over 100,000 pens and pencils.  He was a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed traveling to attend baseball games.  He also was in charge of hiding Easter Eggs each year for the family egg hunt.

Mr. Forsythe is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edith, 1 daughter, Sandra (John) Sherbon of Waterloo, Iowa, 1 son, Don (Sharon) Forsythe, Jr. of Jesup, Iowa, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.  He is also survived by 3 sisters, Beulah (Edwin) Skripsky of Quasqueton, Iowa, Dorothy Clinton of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kathy (Danny) Johnson of Independence, Iowa, and 1 brother, Harold (Sue) Forsythe of Augusta, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Kenneth Hines, 1 sister, Geneva Smith, and 2 infant daughters, Jo Anne and Julie Ann Forsythe.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at the White Funeral Home in Independence.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20th, at the funeral home.
