Independence – Robert L. Porter, 88 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, August 16, 2014, at ABCM Rehabilitation Center Independence – East in Independence.  He was born on September 8, 1925, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Glen and Nellie Porter. He attended school in Boone.  During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a medic in the Pacific Theatre.  On April 16, 1947, he and the former Marian Gladys Schroeder were married in Waterloo, Iowa.  She preceded him in death in 2005.  On July 26, 2009, he and the former Judy Catherine Babak were married in Independence.  Mr. Porter farmed near LaPorte City, Iowa.  He also worked as a machinery mechanic at Hand Implement in Independence.  He retired in 1990.  He was a member of the Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post #30 in Independence.  He also enjoyed time spent fishing and the company of his dog.

Mr. Porter is survived by his wife, Judy, 3 sons, Charles Porter of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Jack (Mona) Porter of Brandon, Iowa, and Roy (Patty) Porter of Winchester, Tennessee, and 2 daughters, Gloria Vance of Oelwein, Iowa, and Linda (Richard) Dugan of Independence, Iowa.  He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 5 great great grandchildren, and 1 sister, Margaret Smith of Edmonds, Washington.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons, Bob Porter and John Porter, 1 daughter, Roberta Porter, 1 brother, and 1 sister.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20^th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence with Rev. Lenny Power officiating.  Casket Bearers will be Chad Porter, Glen Porter, Marcus Porter, Matthew Porter, Brian Vance, and Taryn Dugan. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.  Friends may call for visitation from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 19^th, at the White Funeral Home in Independence where a Military Service begins at 7 p.m.
