Jesup – Norman H. Schoonover, 91, formerly of Jesup, IA, died Monday, April 14, 2014, at Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen, TX.  He was born November 3, 1922 , in Benton Co, IA, the son of Ira Schoonover and Lottie (Smith) Schoonover.  Following his educational years he began working and then served in the US Navy during WWII.  On May 12, 1943, he was united in marriage to Loretta Nell Cook in San Francisco, CA.  They later divorced.  On December 26, 1967, he married the former Marjorie F. Patnode in Galena, Illinois.  Norman worked as a welder at the John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo until retirement.

Mr. Schoonover is survived by two sons, Roger (Sandi) Schoonover, of Waterloo, Keith (Kayleen) Schoonover of Waterloo; one daughter, Norma (Leroy) Westemeier of Jesup; five step-sons, Denny (Gloria) Zarifis of Arizona, Donnie Dennis of Kansas, David (Cathy) Zarifis of Cedar Falls, Doug Zarifis and Tim (Kay) Zarifis of Waterloo; 6 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; one brother, Vernon (Karen) Schoonover of Waterloo; and his longtime special friend, Joan Taylor of  Freeport, Il.  He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marjorie in 2003; one grandson, Ross Schoonover; two brothers, Willard and Robert Schoonover and a sister, Bernadine Musch.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. – Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Jesup with Rev. Msgr. Lyle Wilgenbusch as celebrant.   Monica Bengston, organist, Todd Rohlfsen, soloist and the St. Athanasius Choir will provide the music.  Casket Bearers will be, Brian Schoonover, Kirk Schoonover, Kelly Schoonover, Tim Zarifis, Bill McClain and Ryan Westemeier with burial at St. Athansius Cemetery, Jesup.  Military Rites will be conduceted by Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup and AmVets Post 49 of Cedar Falls.  Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. – 8:00 pm., Monday, April 21, 2014 at White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA, with a 4:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Third & Fourth Degree Rosary and 7:00 p.m. Vigil Service. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials will be directed to Camp Courageous of Iowa at Monticello, IA.
