La Porte City - Wilbur L. “Wes” West, 75 years old of rural La Porte City, IA, died at his home Monday, March 24, 2014. He was born January 16, 1939, at the family home in Waterloo, IA, the son of Edwin J. West and Viola Christina Jensen. He attended Waterloo West High School and graduated with the class of 1957. On September 14, 1963, he was united in marriage to Marcella Ann “Sally” Young at the First Presbyterian Church in La Porte City, IA. Mr. West worked 44 ½ years at John Deere in Waterloo and at the time of his retirement in 2004, he was and experimental tester at Product Engineering. He was a member of the UAW Local 838 in Waterloo. Wilber was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in La Porte City where he was an ordained elder, Sunday School Superintendant, and sang in the church choir. He also helped his wife Sally with Vacation Bible School and church Christmas programs. Following the church closing, he became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jesup.

Mr. West is survived by his wife, Marcella “Sally” West of rural La Porte City, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. – Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church, Jesup, IA, with Rev. Kathleen Sheets officiating. Special music will be by soloist Jeffrey Sheffler. Casket Bearers will be Dennis Sheffler, Jason Sheffler, Jeffrey Sheffler, Luke Wholers, Don Wholers, Randy Young, Ron Allers and Joe Holland. Burial will be 3:00 p.m. – Saturday at Bear Creek Cemetery, rural Brandon, IA. Flag folding will be by members of Pump-Scheer American Legion Post 342 of Jesup. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 28th at the White Funeral Home, Jesup, IA and for an hour before services Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the family.
