Independence – Doyle D. “Barney” Foland, 91 years old, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Independence, Iowa, died on Thursday, June 23, 2011, at his home following a short illness.  He was born on December 20, 1919, in Grand River, Iowa, the son of George Wesley and Ollie Mae (Briner) Foland.  During World War II, Mr. Foland served with the U.S. Army.  On March 10, 1947, he and the former Ellen Virginia Smith were married at the Presbyterian Church in Independence, Iowa.  She preceded him in death in 2010.  Mr. Foland worked at the Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa, until he retired.  Mr. Foland enjoyed a range of activities. Outside he enjoyed fishing, yard work, and gardening.  Inside he enjoyed joking with friends and Cardinals baseball games.

Mr. Foland is survived by 2 grandsons, Jonathon (Maddie) Cafferty of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Daniel Foland of Chicago, Illinois, and 1 great granddaughter, Melissa L. Cafferty.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, 1 son, David Foland, 1 daughter, Linda Cafferty, 4 sisters, and 5 brothers.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011, at the White Funeral Home in Independence, Iowa, with Pastor John Hougen officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence.

Friends may call for visitation from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday at the White Funeral Home in Independence, where a Military Service begins at 4:30 p.m.
