Rowley – Alan D. Westphal, 53 years old, of Rowley, Iowa, died on Monday, June 20, 2011, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence following a sudden illness.  He was born on May 8, 1958, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Clair R. and Gladys Maxine (Kautz) Westphal.  He graduated from high school in Independence in 1976.  On June 2, 1979, he and the former Glenda Fay West were married in Brandon, Iowa.  Mr. Westphal was a resident treatment technician at the Mental Health Institute in Independence.  He enjoyed astronomy and the night sky and traveling on motorcycles and 4 wheelers.

Mr. Westphal is survived by his wife of 31 years, Glenda; 3 sons, Jacob (Crystal) Westphal of Independence, Iowa, William Westphal of Ames, Iowa, and Brian Westphal of Rowley, Iowa; 1 daughter, Alissa Westphal of Rowley, Iowa; and 1 granddaughter, Grace Marie.  He is also survived by 3 brothers, Gene Westphal of Jesup, Iowa, Ron Westphal of Kewanee, Illinois, and Doug (Valerie) Westphal of Fairbank, Iowa; and 2 sisters, Bette (Richard) Brown of Fairbank, Iowa, and Judy (Don) Main of Independence, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 24, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Rowley, Iowa, with Pastor Sheri Andersen officiating.  Burial will be in Rowley Cemetery.

Friends may call for visitation from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at White Funeral Home, Independence.
