INDEPENDENCE – John A. Nagle, 77 years old, of Independence, IA, died Saturday, May 20, 2023, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City, IA, after many years of battling illness.

John Anthony Nagle was born March 11, 1946, in Long Beach, CA, the son of Carl Edger Nagle and Sarah Susan (Campiglia) Nagle. He graduated from Redondo High School in Redondo Beach, CA.

After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and was briefly married to Brilla Sue Lofton. John served his country during the Vietnam War from 1965 – 1975 and completed two tours of duty. He left with letters of commendation and an honorable discharge. During his time with the Navy, he served on the USS Ticonderoga, USS Ogden, USNSLB Sercraft YTM-397 tugboat, and several other ships. He loved his country and served our nation proudly. He grew up on the water and was a sailor through and through.

After his military service, John worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and then the Union Pacific Railroad as a General Foreman, Taylor Yard, Mechanical Division, in Los Angeles, CA. He retired after 30 years of service. On May 20, 1983, John married Renee Lynn Beebe in Costa Mesa, CA. They made their home in Long Beach for a short time until they moved to Bakersfield, CA, where they lived for 20 years. They moved to Unity, NH, for a short time, and then in 2016 they made their home in Independence, IA, to be closer to family. John wasn’t afraid to seek adventure and he loved his family very much.

John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Renee Nagle of Independence, IA; his children, Carrie (Chris) Snyder-Hiett of Orange, CA, Joesph (Christin) Nagle of Ventura, CA; Neil (Heather) Eager of Independence, IA; his grandchildren, Shale Snyder, Avery (Ryan) Harrison, Spencer Nagle, Jacob Nagle, Amelia Eager, Claire Eager, Zachary Nagle; his great-granddaughter, Autumn Harrison; one brother, William (JoAnn) Nagle of Waynesville, NC; one sister, Sarah (Carolee) Nagle of Redwood City, CA; and several nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Michael Nagle; one brother, Frank Nagle; and one sister, Pauline Nagle.

There will be no local services at this time.
