GILBERTVILLE - Thomas John “Tom” Delagardelle, 88 years old, of Gilbertville, IA, died Saturday, May 4, 2024, at his home while surrounded by his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Tom will be 10:30 a.m. – Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, IA, with Father Noah Diehm presiding. Burial will follow at Sancta Maria Catholic Cemetery, Gilbertville.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Gilbertville, beginning with a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary at 3:30 p.m. and visitation continuing until 7:00 p.m.

Visitation will also be for an hour before services, Wednesday, at the church.

Memorials will be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Bosco System and Cedar Valley Hospice.

Tom was born on May 20, 1935, on the family farm in Fox Township of rural Black Hawk County, IA, the son of Frank Xavier Delagardelle and Mary Antoinette (Nie) Delagardelle. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School with the class of 1953, in Gilbertville. On May 28, 1956, he was united in marriage to Shirley Mae Schares in Gilbertville. Tom was a farmer most of his life and had worked at Youngblut Construction in the early years of adulthood; he also worked many years at the Gilbertville Locker. He and Shirley moved off the farm to Gilbertville in 1998, but he never really completely retired. He was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church and a longtime member of Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a member of the church choir and an usher. In earlier years he enjoyed playing baseball for the town team and in later years, watching his children and grandchildren participate in many sporting activities. With Tom it was “Faith, Family and Farming.”

Tom is survived by his wife, Shirley of Gilbertville; five sons, Terry (Lori) Delagardelle, Chuck (Wendy) Delagardelle, Leon (Lisa) Delagardelle all of Jesup, Duane Delagardelle of Arlington, MN, Kevin Delagardelle of Raymond, IA; three daughters, Connie (Chuck) Trebon of Waterloo, IA, Dawn (Glen) Weber of Gilbertville, Shari (Brian) Alberts of Swisher, IA; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 3 great great-grandchildren; four brothers, Paul Delagardelle of Gilbertville, Irvin (Donna) Delagardelle, Norman (Linda) Delagardelle of Jesup, Clem (Kay) Delagardelle of Gilbertville; and six sisters, Dorothy (Warren) Waddell of Waterloo, Dolores (Ted) Even of Gilbertville, Joan Schmit of Jesup, Mary (Dick) Schmitz of Waterloo, Wilma (Tom) Mullen of La Porte City, IA, and Betty (Joe) Youngblut of Jesup.

He is preceded in death by two grandchildren, Natalie Trebon and Branden Curl; his parents; four brothers, John (Joan) Delagardelle, Joe Delagardelle, Leo (Irma) Delagardelle, Willard (Helen) Delagardelle; two sisters, Alma (Fritz) Schares and Esther Delagardelle (in infancy); also a brother in law, LeRoy Schmit.
