WALKER – Roger A. Bahr, 85 years old, of Walker, IA, died at home, Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. – Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church, in Independence, IA, with Pastor Toby Montgomery, officiant. Music will be by Lillian Cue, organist, and Melody Malek Rowe, vocal soloist. Military honors will be conducted by the Bechter – Boies VFW Post 2440 of Independence, assisted by the United States Army. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, at the Fremont Cemetery, rural Tripoli, IA.

Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 5th at White Funeral Home, Independence, and will continue for an hour before services, Saturday, at the church.

Roger Allyn Bahr was born February 20, 1939, on his family’s farm in rural Dysart, IA, the son of Harry J. & Emma F. (Jessen) Bahr. He graduated from Dysart High School with the class of 1957 and continued his education at DeVRY Technical Institute in Chicago, IL. After college he moved back to Iowa and began working at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, IA. He was drafted into the United States Army, and while stationed in Germany, Roger was a member of the U.S. Military Police Corps. While he was in Germany, Roger & friends he met in the Army took tours of Germany & Italy instead of going home on leave. Upon his return home to the U.S., Roger continued working for Collins Radio. On June 18, 1967, he started working for WMT- TV/KGAN and eventually Fox. He worked for WMT/KGAN for almost 57 years and was still working as a broadcast engineer, maintaining the TV tower transmitters to ensure everyone had a clear picture and sound when tuning into their favorite show.

On September 15, 1968, Roger was united in marriage to Karen A. Bockhaus in Tripoli, IA. Roger loved his family and his cats. He enjoyed maintaining his property in Walker and feeding the birds. Roger enjoyed music of all types and liked to volunteer with Karen for Orchestra Iowa. They also loved to travel and usually visited a different place every year. Roger loved anything computers and electronics and could fix anything. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Independence where he was an elder and volunteered his time and talents on committees and in different positions, most notably with the tech team and as co-head usher.

Roger is survived by his wife of 55 years, Karen A. Bahr of Walker, IA; one daughter, Jennifer Bahr of Vinton, IA; and many nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Elwyn Bahr; and his sister, Evelyn Henke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be directed to Camp Courageous, the church and to other organizations that were important to Roger.
